Obese Men – More Likely to Survive Car Crashes!

With all the risks associated with obesity such as increased risk of kidney stones, heart failure, cancer, and many others, it’s not looking good for the big guys, but finally we found ONE benefit of being overweight.

Recent studies have shown that men with BMIs between 35 and 50 are more likely to survive a car crash than men with BMI’s between 15 and 18.4. For those that are unfamiliar with body mass index, also known as BMI, it is a calculation based on height and weight that is believed to correlate with the amount of body fat one possesses. A person with a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.

A recent study showed that seat-belted men with a BMI between 35 and 50 are 22% more likely to survive a crash than seat-belted men with a BMI ranging from 15 to 18.4. However, if the seatbelt is removed from the equation, obese men are 10% more likely to die than ‘skinny’ men due to the extra “mass and momentum.”

Unfortunately for obese women, they do not benefit what-so-ever from their extra pounds in the event of a car accident. In fact, belted obese women are 10% more likely to die in a car crash than belted women with a BMI ranging from 18.5-25.9 (this is considered the ‘normal’ range). There are no statistical differences among BMI categories when a seatbelt is not worn.
